Crystel Ceresa

Crystel Ceresa is a Swiss artist born in Geneva, in 1977. She graduated from the Vocational Training Center Applied Arts (CFPAA) in 1998 and HEAD Geneva (University of Art and Design), in 2004. In 2013 she received a grant from the Fondation Patino, Cité des Arts, Paris. Her exhibits are mainly in Northern Europe (Belgium, Holland, Denmark). Currently, Ceresa lives and works in Geneva.

Her work is mainly based on a drawing technique with airbrushing. Through drawing, her work captures all the paradoxes of the human body, between perception and sensation, the visible and invisible, to show all the fragility of humans. Ideas of the personal and intimacy are important to her work. Ceresa likes to experiment with various pastel graffiti techniques. Her work opens up a wonderful and fantastic universe, delivering an atmosphere between tradition and modernity.

Ceresa paints words into her work, she does not write them. Her semantic fields are as rich as her color variations. Her paintings of colorful beaches, her “color fields,” similar to the water lilies of Monet, abound with words and poems taken from her interior repertoire. Occasionally she allows viewers a glimpse into her mind, other times keeping her thoughts slightly more hidden, as if by modesty. They may be riddles to solve or landscapes to get lost in within her work. Using airbrushing, with its powdery, delicate, and fuzzy nature lends itself particularly to the presentation of her narratives. Ceresa’s dreamlike compositions lend an air of mystery and compel viewers to go deeper with her work.
