Thierry Feuz

Thierry Feuz was born in Vienna, Austria, in 1968. In 2003 he graduated from HEAD Geneva (University of Art and Design) after studying art history at the University of Neuchâtel. He lives and works in Geneva and Vienna.

The most striking element of Feuz is the profoundly aesthetic dimension of his work. Harmonious compositions lead to colors full of vitality and pleasing motifs. However, Feuz’s represented universe is not purely ornamental.

In the last two decades, he has been consistently developing multiple series of paintings, including “Supernatural,” “Psychotropical,” “Technicolor,” and “Gulfstream.” These series share a fundamental characteristic: each one appears to increase the image of the previous as if seen through a microscope.

Feuz’s specifically developed technique using unconventional art tools, lacquer and acrylic paint. He manipulates the lacquer to create new textures and designs, adding an intentional element of shine to his work.

He uses this scientific approach to reexamine classical conceptions of nature, a force both beautiful and ephemeral. Combining abstraction and figuration, he expresses this deteriorating materiality and allows himself to explore the transformations of instability. He uses perspective to reposition his point of view and thus detach matter from its usual environment.

The titles of his works are enigmatic, rather than offering an unequivocal reading key, further deepening their mystery. The viewer quickly understands the need to go beyond preconceived notions to comprehend the depth of Feuz’s work.

His work journeys into other dimensions, on abstract backgrounds far from any naturalism, flowers rise joyfully while others plow and fade. The decrepitude and mutation are not far away, as if what is depicted was captured in a transient state. The animal, vegetable, and mineral kingdom is free of all scale and hierarchy. Flowers, jellyfish, and bacteria dance and float in a peaceful cosmos.

The sumptuous works of Thierry Feuz offer the viewer a unique experience, to contemplate both a kind of ideal galaxy and its inner world.
